Our impact

We are always looking at how we can improve our impact by giving back.

We’re not going to preach like we’re perfect but we remain committed to reducing our carbon footprint, working with likeminded suppliers and increasing sustainability on all fronts. There are many things we try to get right: we reject pesticides, we try to source the best fair-trade nuts as close to Belgium as possible, hire as diversely as possible and pay a living wage. We are proud to be a queer-owned small family business and our cafe is a safe space for all.
But there’s always more to improve on!

Due to growing demand, we must re-invest almost every euro we make to keep up. It’s a happy problem - but reinvesting takes a lot of our capital. One day we hope to be bigger and have more influence to inspire change. We aren’t there yet - but the truth is you don’t have to be a big company to take action

BUDDY BUDDY currently donates to the following organisations:
- WWF (we also donate €0,10 per jar returned to us to WWF);
- Rainbow House Brussels;
- Sea Shepherd;
- Amazon Watch;
- Cool Earth;
- Stonewall UK.

We want to be part of the solution and tackle issues such as:

- exploitation and cruelty against our animal buddies;
- deforestation and climate change;
- inequality and discrimination against LGBTQ+ buddies;
- ocean degradation and disappearing marine life;
- pesticides, chemicals, plastics etc contaminating food and harming our precious ecosystem.

There are of course countless problems, injustice and suffering and we promise to do more as we grow.

Our vegan cafe - why aren’t we more in-your-face about being vegan?

We have been criticised by some vegans for not being ‘in your-face’ vegan enough. This is understandable, however once people understand our approach they are more forgiving. We are trying to be the best coffee bar possible - not the best vegan coffee bar. We believe in normalising veganism (it’s 2021, of course we don’t exploit animals!). The majority of our customers are not vegan which means we have such a great opportunity to blow their minds and show they can be plant-based and still eat and drink their favourite things. We don’t need animal corpses or secretions in order for things to taste good.

One of our proudest moments was when an older couple came to BUDDY BUDDY for coffees. When the older lady realised we don’t serve cow milk, her reaction was “ew gross, vegetable milks are disgusting, I only drink cow milk.” We responded with kindness and told her we spent a lot of time blind-taste testing and believe our oat milk is something she might like. So we offered her a cappuccino, saying, 'if you don’t like it, you don’t have to pay for it.” That approach works every time. It turned out she loved it so much, she made her husband carry a 6-pack box of oat milk all the way home....

This anecdote sums up our take on being a vegan business. We want to be super approachable and kind to all people - and at the same time normalise plant-based food and drinks and inspire people to not be scared of this change.
